Position Purpose
Under the specific supervision of the Head of School, the Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and day-to-day oversight of the school's financial operations. This role exists to ensure the financial integrity, stability, and sustainability of Providence Christian Academy through effective budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, risk management, and operational stewardship in alignment with the school's mission and strategic priorities.
Essential Functions
Financial Leadership and Strategy
- Support the development and execution of the school's financial strategy in alignment with the mission and strategic plan.
- Serve as a key financial advisor to the Head of School and Board of Trustees on budgeting, forecasting, and financial sustainability.
- Prepare and present financial reports, analyses, dashboards, and recommendations to the Head of School, Board, and Finance Committee.
- Ensure financial decisions support enrollment goals, academic excellence, and long-term organizational health.
Budgeting and Financial Management
- Lead the annual operating and capital budgeting process in collaboration with senior leadership and department heads.
- Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and recommend corrective actions as needed.
- Oversee cash flow management, reserves, investments (as applicable), and debt obligations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls, financial procedures, and policies.
Accounting, Reporting, and Compliance
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and tuition billing.
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Coordinate the annual audit and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations, tax filings, and reporting requirements.
Tuition, Enrollment, and Financial Aid Collaboration
- Partner with enrollment and advancement leadership to support tuition revenue forecasting and financial aid planning.
- Oversee tuition billing, payment plans, and collections in a manner consistent with school values and customer service standards.
- Analyze tuition pricing structures and financial aid strategies to balance accessibility with financial sustainability.
Business Operations and Risk Management
- Oversee business office operations and assigned auxiliary services (e.g., facilities, transportation, food service).
- Manage vendor relationships.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate financial and operational risks.
- Ensure sound purchasing practices, expense controls, and asset protection procedures.
Leadership, Collaboration, and Administration
- Supervise, mentor, and develop finance and business office staff.
- Maintain organized financial records, reporting calendars, and compliance documentation.
- Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and service within the business office.
- Collaborate closely with academic and administrative leaders to align financial resources with program needs.
- Serve as a trusted financial leader and representative of Providence within the school community.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field required; Master's degree and/or CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 5 8 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in a private school, nonprofit, or education-related organization.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Experience supporting leadership teams and working with Boards of Trustees and Finance Committees.
- Demonstrated ability to align financial operations with a mission-driven organization.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders.
- High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
