General Responsibilities

The Student Services Project Counselor will be employed on a full-time basis to provide assistance to the Project Director in planning, implementing, and evaluating the Student Support Services Project. The project counselors are under the general supervision of the Project Coordinator. The counselors will spend 100% of their time working with the project to ensure its success.

Job Functions

  • Assist in the selection and orientation of participants into the program with the TRIO programs, admissions, career counseling, the TRS Department and community agencies.
  • Establish liaison with participants, their parents, faculty and staff in order to assure that communications are clear and consistent. Advise participants on College policies and procedures, and assist them with course selection. Conduct intake interviews, assess new participants, and interpret results.
  • Assist the Coordinator in recruiting and providing orientation for prospective Student Support Services participants, and assist with the design, and development.
  • Maintain participant's files, document participant contacts, submit information to the secretary to input/generate reports.
  • Counsel and advise participants regarding career planning, educational information, financial assistance, etc., and provide information about 4-year post-secondary opportunities to potential transfer students.
  • Assist the Project Coordinator in setting up workshops and advising for project participants. Arrange and evaluate cultural/educational activities for participants.
  • Manage reporting systems established by the Director. This includes the development/implementation of surveys to participants, follow-up on non-returning participants, and evaluation of program services/activities at the end of each semester.
  • Collect, analyze and update data and compile evaluation reports and other reports.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in counseling or related area required. Minimum of two years' work experience in high school, college or agency counseling. Must be able to relate well to disadvantaged youth and communicate effectively with the community, the targeted students, parents of SSS students, college staff and others. The Project Counselor will work under the direct supervision of the SSS Project Coordinator, and is expected to operate with maximum independence and self-directed initiative.

Anticipated Work Hours

Monday - Thursday, 8:00 am - 5:30 pm, Friday, 8:00 am - 11:30 am. May require some weekend/overnight travel and evening work hours, as necessary in order to satisfy the programs parameters and objectives.
